The First Man in Rome by Colleen McCullough

Wow...I finally feel like I am starting to get a grasp on Roman politics at this time.  I have read several books that try to take you through the system in a biographical or historical context, But McCullough's novel helps you live Roman politics.  This book sparked a passion for Roman history that is startling to me.  It also has given me a basic context to add the more difficult historical and biographical readings to.  My only caution of this book is that if you have little to no background in Roman history, this will bias and shape your opinion forever.  Not a small feat for such an amazing book.  Although the book is long it was completely engrossing and engaging.
